Muladhara (Root Chakra)

The Muladhara Chakra, also known as the Root Chakra, forms the foundation of the chakra system. Located at the base of the spine (in between anus and genitalia), it represents our physical identity, security, and survival instincts. Balancing this chakra fosters financial stability, good health, and a grounded sense of being.

The importance of the Muladhara Chakra is rooted in ancient Indian scriptures. The Shiva Samhita emphasizes the role of this chakra as the foundation of spiritual practice:

In yogic traditions, it is considered the starting point for awakening the Kundalini energy.

The Bijakshar, or seed mantra, of the Muladhara Chakra is LAM (लं). Chanting this mantra vibrates the Root Chakra, helping to release blockages and energize the base of your being.

  • Frequency: The Muladhara Chakra resonates at a frequency of 396 Hz, which is associated with releasing fear and grounding oneself.
  • Element: Earth is the element of the Root Chakra, symbolizing stability, grounding, and connection to the physical world.

The governing deity of the Muladhara Chakra is Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of stability and security. His energy embodies the qualities of grounding and wisdom that support the foundation of life.

The Muladhara Chakra is represented by a four-petaled lotus. Each petal symbolizes one of the fundamental aspects of human survival: food, sleep, shelter, and security. At the center of the lotus is a yellow square, representing the Earth element, and the seed syllable “LAM.”

  • Choose a Quiet Space: Sit in a calm and undisturbed area.
  • Posture: Sit cross-legged (Sukhasana/Padmasana/Siddhasana) or in a chair with your feet flat on the ground.
  • Focus on the Root Chakra: Visualize a red lotus flower at the base of your spine.
  • Chant LAM: Inhale deeply and chant the mantra “LAM” during exhalation.
  • Grounding Visualization: Imagine roots extending from your spine into the Earth, anchoring and stabilizing you.

Daily Duration: Start with 10-40 minutes (there is no limit) daily and gradually increase as you deepen your practice.

  • Mental Benefits: Reduces anxiety, fear, and insecurity. Promotes a sense of safety and stability.
  • Spiritual Benefits: Prepares the body and mind for spiritual awakening by grounding the Kundalini energy.

Balancing the Root Chakra ensures that the energy flow to higher chakras remains unobstructed. Here are some practices:

  • Yoga: Poses like Mountain Pose (Tadasana (ताड़ासन)), Warrior Pose (Virabhadrasana (वीरभद्रासन)), and Tree Pose (Vrikshasana (वृक्षासन)) align the Root Chakra.
  • Diet: Consume root vegetables like carrots, beets, and potatoes to connect with the Earth element.
  • Affirmations: Repeat affirmations like “I am safe,” “I am grounded,” and “I have enough.”
  • Integration: Ensure harmony with the Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) by fostering emotional balance and creativity.

The Muladhara Chakra is the foundation of the spiritual journey. It grounds the individual, providing stability and strength to rise through higher chakras. Only by cultivating a balanced Root Chakra can one awaken Kundalini energy and progress toward Nirvana.

By activating and balancing the Muladhara Chakra, you embark on a path of security, health, and spiritual awakening, setting the stage for ultimate liberation.
